Medical Definition of EMPTY SELLA SYNDROME

:  a condition in which the subarachnoid space extends into the sella turcica causing it to become filled with cerebrospinal fluid, the pituitary gland is compressed, and the diaphragma sellae is greatly reduced but pituitary function usually remains normal unless impaired by some other factor (as an infarction, irradiation, or a tumor)
